Ok, so I actually got this idea a while back, to create a board game of sorts based on all four Wingfeather books, where you travel through the series, doing all the adventures and battling Fangs, but left it to gather dust for a few months. It wasn’t going anywhere and just wasn’t innovative. But then I had a cool idea. Usually when someone I know gets frustrated in a game, they throw their cards into the air. Have you ever tried this? Just throw a deck of cards? It’s pretty fun until you realize someone’s gonna have to pick them all up. But then, I thought, what if picking up the cards could help you win? And that’s how I came up with the
Unnamed Ridgerunner Card Game.
The general concept is simple: Players play as Ridgerunners scouring the Green Hollows for fruit. The main gimmick is that the RIDGERUNNERS “shake the trees” of the Green Hollows to make the fruit fall, by throwing small stacks of fruit cards into the air and grabbing one of them that they find best before the other players do. But the interest in the game comes in with the fruit types. Some fruits will land face-down, so you don’t know what it is unless you caught a glimpse of the fruit as it fell.
Some fruit is SOFT, meaning it will squish if landed face-down and thus will be worser! Some fruit, on the other hand, is SPIKED. It must be picked up with care, (face-up), or the one who picked shall be pricked! Some fruits, alternatively, can be identified by their sheen. If a fruit is GILDED, it has a golden card border and a more powerful effect. If a fruit is RADIANT, it has a holofoil card border and an increased juice level!
But how do these fruits help a Ridgerunner win?
Every fruit has a JUICE LEVEL, and some fruits have special card effects on them. When a fruit is grabbed, it may be placed in the Ridgerunner’s tableau (their DEN). In the den, they can squeeze out their fruits into BIBES, or bake their fruits in PIES. A bibe is made when fruits are placed on top of each other. A pie is made when fruits are placed next to each other.
Bibes score points based on the juice level of each fruit, but may also use the effect of the top fruit only. Pies score based on the fruits’ effects, but may also score a bonus of the highest juice score in the pie.
‘The longer they sits, the worser they gets’, so don’t leave your fruits unprepared for too long or they will rot!
What kinds of fruits are there?
There are many unique and fantastical fruits that appear bright in a Ridgerunner’s eye! There are currently 18 types of fruits, with unique effects. Apparently many varieties of Apple are a very common Hollows crop:
- Apple
- Applecot
- Vineapple
- Shineapple
- Pomegranana
- Sugarberry
- Plumyum
- Durian
- Bloomberry
- Nectarstar
- Sea Dragonfruit
- Cocomelon (yes yes laugh it up)
- Figuava
- Lingon Lotus
- Willowberry
- Milky Kiwi
- Tanginut
It’s still in its brainstorming phase of development. I don’t know if I have rights to make this. I definitely wouldn’t sell it publicly without obtaining permission from the Wingfeather team. Ideas would be much appreciated. Cheers!
That’s genius!!! I want to play it so badly!!!! It sounds so fun!
