They realize that, Hey, Kalmar knows where the first well is and they dig up the dead, heal everyone and Esben and Rudric make up!
Well the actual ending leaves it up to the reader to make up what happens with The First Well and Janner. I'm wondering if they'll o anything more with that when they get there in the show though.
Spoilers below
Rudric should be charged with involuntary bear-slaughter
That was definitely one of the most tragic things in the series...absolutely heartbreaking. I considered whether or not Esben could be brought back to life post canon and in theory I think he could (if, for example, when the Maker sent Janner back to them post-epilogue He sent Esben with him as well). However part of the beauty of WFS is that people die. Loved ones die. They die and they oftentimes stay dead. Trials like that come, and we have to cling to God (i.e. the characters have to cling to the Maker). Yet Andrew Peterson still gives hope, a sliver of hope to poor heartbroken Nia (the others are heartbroken too but I believe Nia has lost the most in her life) in the First Well.
I read one AtE fanfiction where someone brought Podo, Esben, Rudric, and Nugget back to life. I felt as though it really destroyed the weight and wonder of the story. That said, maybe I'll find time to do a one-shot, just for you :D
As of right now, though, I'm slowly but surely working on the next fic in my series, in which I will be shipping Nia with someone, and he will not die <3
Alas, twas most certainly a tragic ending…😔
I'll...contemplate the balance between writing and every other thing in my life...
That was one of the most tragic things in the whole series...
