Yeah yeah, everyone talks about Janner’s death and the epilogue and the fork factory and blah blah blah- BUT THERES TWO SCENES IN TMitH I FEEL LIKE NO ONE TALKS ABOUT:
Number 1 is the scene where Janner follows Kalmar’s footprints in the snow all the way to the chicken coop, just to find blood and feathers and dead chickens and stuff.
“Janner reached the coop without a sound. Kal's footprints led beneath it.
A blood-spattered pile of white feathers littered the snow, as if someone had emptied a pillow and sprinkled berry juice all over it. Janner clenched his toeth against the sudden urge to vomit.
Just as he gathered the courage to peek into the shadows beneath the coop, Kalmar's hand shot out and grabbed Janner by the leg. His claws dug in, and Janner fell. The little Fang snarled and leapt on Janner. He thrust his snout into Janner's face and bared his teeth. Little feathers were stuck in his dark, wet whiskers.” LIKE IM SORRY?! YEAH THATS TOTALLY A NORMAL THING YOU’D SEE IN A FAMILY BOOK. WOWSERS. It’s not pleasant reading that at midnight.
Moment 2 was the literal EXECUTION. I mean, that alone is a crazy thing to see in a family book.
“The guard cut the bonds around Kalmar's ankles and pointed him up the gallows steps. Janner heard Nia whisper, "Be strong, my love."
They reached the top, and one of the guards positioned them over the mapdoor. He draped a noose over Kalmar's head, then Nia's. Bunge climbed the steps after them with a dark look, and Janner thought he saw a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. Perhaps he was thinking of Rudric's return and the fury that was sure to descend upon him.” BUDDY WHAT? BUDDY HUH? MY JAW WAS LITERALLY HANGING OPEN WHEN I READ THIS FOR THE FIRST TIME. I WAS LIKE, “yo this is a family book? For real?” HUHHHHHHHHHH
So yeah. I feel like those moments are kinda crazy and a little insane. Alright anyways that’s it for my nonsense, ummmm have these foodies:

BY THE WAY YOU GUYS, IM NOT HATIN’ ON THE BOOK, OR ANY OF THE BOOKS! I LOVE THEM AND THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE OUT OF THE SERIES (I seriously can’t choose which one tho)!
Those are such good scenes! (also they're both in TMitH, not TWatWK 😉) And they are intense!
I'm in several reader groups on Facebook, and Wingfeather is constantly recommended (As it should be; I mean, seriously. It's Wingfeather!), but so many times I see parents shocked that these books that came so highly recommended for their kids are so dark! They're just not for little kids! I always tell families that parents with kids under 10 need to pre-read them!
Oh, but I also know families that read them to their 5 year olds. Even younger kids, probably. They loved them. 😊
Our mom tried audiobook lotr some years back when none of us even knew about wingfeather. We were young. Got about to the barrow wights.
Yeah . . . I guess the other scenes just hit me harder (emotionally).
THAT IS SO TRUE!!! But seriously that scene with the chickens is one of the saddest things in the whole book (I know there’s a lot of very sad things im just saying)
I kinda forgot about those scenes... at least whenever I think of it as kid friendly. Though it seems most dont really consider it a kids book, which makes sense! ...maybe my little brother shouldnt have read it...
These are some of the reasons I consider The Wingfeather Saga to be a young adult series and not as much a children's series
i just wonder how they're gonna animate the scene with Kalmar and the chickens😭 (they probably won't XD)
Hmm…u gotta a point there…
yeah those aren't the most for-children parts of the book, but they're really good because they set the mood really well. i like that he doesn't glaze over the hard parts, he lets it be raw and real because even if real life isn't always like this, real life isn't all flowers and sunshine.
The only reason this is considered a "book for kids" is only because of the mix of fantacy and art that LOOKS like its for kids, but in reality, I think its more for teens then anything.
There's a litteral dictatorship, they are living in a very dystopian environment, kidnapping/forcefully taking of kids, murder, vengeance, madness, war, scorched and destroyed lands, mysterious/nameless evils, human/child enslavement, treason, loss, the twisting of human blood, dark magic, destroyed families, betrayal, aaaand a bunch more that I dont think I want to list right now ^_^
This book is the best book I have ever read to this day
(Why was Janner clenching his toeth? I know what you meant it’s just funny XD) FR THOUGH, girl! That second scene was so stress-inducing 😭
