Chapter 27 Castle Flame
The inside of the castle was beautiful, the walls were a gray color and the floors were made out of gold and silver marble. The hallways were lined with flaming torches, and led to the throne room. It was magnificent.
There were five thrones, each was covered in a red velvet covering, and sitting perfectly in the thrones was a king, a queen, a prince, and two princesses, one older and one younger. Leading up to the thrones was a deep red velvet carpet, and from the tall ceilings hung a golden chandelier with bright fiery orange and red flames spun perfectly out of stained glass. Above the thrones was a large round stained glass window of a red dragon with a burst of orange and yellow fire coming out of the dragon's mouth.
“Where are we?” Janner thought as they walked single file through the hallway into the throne room. The doors to the throne room were closed. The doors were made of solid gold and the handles were made of silver. Two guards wearing silver shiny armor with little red accents stood in front of the doors.
The guards opened the doors to the throne room letting the Wingfeathers walk through. They stopped mid center in the room as the guards announced them to the royals.
“Your Majesties, we found these newcomers outside Castle Flame searching for a drawbridge.”, one of the guards said.
At this the king spoke up and said, “Hello, the name is King Cole. How can we help you?” The king wore a red suit with a white handkerchief; he had dark brown hair, topped with a gold crown. He wore a kind smile on his face. Janner nudged Kalmar to introduce them but to Kalmar's delight, Esben introduced them.
“Hello my name is King Esben Wingfeather and this is my family. We are currently being chased down by an evil queen and we need to take cover so we saw that there's this castle. And then the drawbridge just came down and the guards kind of pushed us here. But we would be very happy and very thankful if you all would take us in and hide us from this queen.” he said.
The king and queen exchanged a glance at each other and the prince and princesses looked worried.
“We didn't mean to intrude, it's just we're kind of running for our lives here so it would be helpful if you all could hide us.” Kalmar said.
“This queen you're talking about, she wouldn't happen to be named Queen Opal would she?” the King asked
“Yes.. Queen Opal is looking for us.” Esben answered.
“If the one that you're running from is Queen Opal then we will gladly let you stay here. We know what it's like to be hurt by Opal.” the queen said.
She wore a beautiful floor length crimson dress that looked like it was made out of satin with a little silver heart locket. Her hair was a beautiful brown color, and styled in many little braids.
“Thank you so much!” Leeli said, as she noticed the older princess was staring at them sympathetically. The younger was playing around in her throne playing with her dress. She looked about 5 years old.
“Gracie, can you bring the Wingfeathers to your room, Opal will never look for them there?” the queen whose name was Amber asked.
“Of course, Mom.”
“Come on Sadie.” Gracie said to her mother and then to her little sister. Gracie wore a beautiful satin white dress with little gold swirls everywhere and a gold heart locket. Her hair was a lighter brown color and one side of it was pushed behind her ear. She had purple eyes like lilacs and her smile was as soft as a flower. Her little sister, Sadie, had an adorable frilly red dress with white polka dots. Her hair flowed to her neck and she had little curtain bangs; she had golden colored eyes and the cutest 5 year-old smile.
“Come on, my room is this way.” Princess Gracie said as she walked through the hallway leading the Wingfeathers to her room. The hallway that she took the Wingfeathers down was full of picture frames and tables with beautiful arrangements of fire flowers which Gracie explained were Ember Island’s signature flowers and they held a special healing power.
Gracie led them all with Janner and Sara close behind
“And we're here!”
Gracie said as she stood in front of a brown wooden door with a gold door handle and a little purple sign on the door reading in purple smooth crayon, Gracie's room.
“You all can stay here until Opal leaves you alone.” Gracie said as she turned the door knob to her room and opened it. Inside the walls were baby pink and covered in a mural of ginormous colorful dragons in all sorts of colors. She had a pink canopy bed (which Sadie immediately jumped onto) and her pink and white nightstand had a lamp on it that was shaped like a dragon. There was a little white desk in her room that had homework sheets, a green dragon stuffed animal and a ton of little dragon figurines. Her chandelier looked like red and orange flames of fire spun out of glass.
“Welcome to my room!” she said as a 9 year old boy ran through her room.
“Blaze! this is my room and we have guests.” she scolded the boy. “Sis! Why can't I be in your room?”
“Because you always mess up my stuff. You may like your room messy and unkempt, but not me. I like mine neat and put together.” Gracie said.
“But Sadie gets to come!”
“OUT!”
“But Gracieee!!!”
“Blaze Maxamus Spark! Now!!”
“Fine…”, Blaze sighed as he walked out of the room to his own down the hallway, this one had a lighter brown door with a red sign on it that read (in sloppier handwriting) Blaze’s room.
“Sorry, that was my brother Blaze, he always messes up my room.” Gracie said.
“In the words of Serena Shimmer ‘it's quite alright dear.’’ Oskar said.
“Wow, your room is amazing!” Sara said in awe, admiring the beautifully painted mural of the dragons on the wall.
Gracie walked over to her and said, “Thanks, this mural is my favorite part of the room. It shows the true nature of Ember Island, or what it used to be anyways…..”, Gracie said, looking longingly at the beautifully colored dragons.
“What do you mean used to be?” Janner asked.
“Do you know how my parents knew about Queen Opal?” she asked.
“Yes.” Janner responded.
“Well, only last year she attacked us.” Gracie said sadly.
“What happened?”, Kalmar asked.
“You see all these dragons on the wall, well they all used to live here. That's kind of our thing. Actually, we have dragons, this is really their Kingdom. Those marshy swamp places with lava that you all saw when you came here are where they used to live. But a year ago, Queen Opal attacked us and captured the Queen Dragon causing all the other dragons to flee to Opal. Only one stayed, the princess. We were able to hide Princess Amethyst in the dragon hatchery in our basement so that the effects of the Queen Dragon's call from Opal's whereabouts wouldn't affect her because if we lost our last dragon, Ember Island would fall.” Gracie explained.
“What's so important about the dragons being here?” Nia asked.
“The dragon's fire heats the lava river and powers the village along with everything else on the Island. If all the dragons go, that means no lava in the river which means no heat, no power and all of our defenses are gone. Our last Dragon Amethyst has been heating the lava rivers, but her power is not strong enough so I have to use my powers to heat the river.” She explained
“Powers?” Leeli asked,
“Yeah, I have fire powers,” Gracie said, smiling.
“Gracie, show them your fire!” Sadie exclaimed as she bounced on the bed.
“Ok I’ll try”
Gracie opened her hand and curled her fingers, suddenly a few flames of fire burst out from her hands.
“Fire!” Sadie exclaimed as she clapped her hands together.
“You have fire too Sadie.”
“Oh right!”
Sadie turned from Gracie to Leeli and asked, “Can I show you my powers?”
“Sure, I would love to see them!” Leeli responded.
Sadie did the same as Gracie but instead of red flames hers were blue! “Fire!!” She squealed!
“Whoa! That’s so cool!” Leeli said.
“You-You have fire powers!!” Kalmar exclaimed!
“Yes, yes I do but they're a lot weaker now than they were a few years ago.” she explained.
“The worst part is neither I nor anyone else in all of Ember Island knows why Opal's doing this.” Gracie said, face down on her canopy bed, looking out her little window, watching the smoke rising up from the chimneys of the village houses.
The Wingfeathers all exchanged glances because they knew exactly why Queen Opal was attacking Ember Island.
“Gracie, we know why Opal's attacking Ember Island.” Janner said calmly.
“Wait, how could you possibly know? Wait.. are you a spy?,” Gracie said, jumping up and pointing at them.
“No! We're not spies. But we were captured by Queen Opal and when we were there she told us why she was doing all of this. It's because of something that happened hundreds of years ago between the five lands and Aerwiar. She told us that The Maker created all of Aerwiar and He created a crystal to hold the power of each one of the lands. But people got greedy and took the crystal for themselves and in doing so the crystal shattered into five pieces. Then one leader from each one of the lands took one of the crystals for themselves.” Janner explained.
“So you're telling me that Queen Opal is ruining people's lives just because of something that happened hundreds of years ago and all for a crystal?” Gracie asked.
“Yes….” Janner said, hoping that she wouldn't make them tell her about the fact that his own father scared Opal for life and that's the real reason why she is going after them.
“Do you believe us? Leeli asked.
Gracie sighed and said “You know I wouldn't. I wouldn't believe any of this if it wasn't for one thing, I've seen the crystal.” she said.
Oh boy, plot twist Opal has hurt a lot of people.
