Quest for the Crystals chapter 19

Okay this is a VERY important chapter also the last I'm posting today.

This has one of 2 plot twists that change the whole book. Also a really really good chapter!:) Make such you read the last chapter (18) before reading this one!

Chapter 19 Betrayal 

“It all happened 15 years ago.. I was only 10 at the time, I was living at The Gemstone Palace happily with my mother, Queen Harper, my father, King Emerald, and my older sister, Princess Skye. Everything was wonderful till one day..” Opal said as her voice trailed off. “There's something you don't know about me.” Opal said to the kids, 

“We barely know who you are." Janner said sarcastically. 

"This is something almost no one in the world knows about me.” She said strongly as she unbuckled the little teal clasp on her cape. Her cape dropped to the floor revealing two clear purplish, bent over, broken wings! 

The children gasped. “You're a fairy?!” Leeli asked. 

“Yes, I'm actually the last of my kind, for many fairies are small, but my kind are more like humans with wings.” She explained. 

“What happened to them?” Janner asked. 

“For that answer I will need to continue my story.” She told them. 

“One day war broke out in my kingdom, actually, it was during the night. I remember the sounds from my bed of my mother crying for my father. Through the night the war got worse. My sister, my mother and I were standing in the hall next to the castle gate when my mother said to Skye "I have to fight, it's gotten too bad out there; they need me, Skye, protect Ruby with everything you have.” My mother said and kissed her and me on the head before rushing out the gate to fight in the war.” 

“Who's Ruby?” Kalmar asked. 

“If you stop interrupting me, you'll find out!” she said coldly and continued, 

“At about midday, when the war was 10 times worse than it was in the morning, the fighting Kingdom sent back-up trolls and dragons and even cows that had a lot of teeth. My sister bent down to me and said strongly, as tears rolled down my face, “Hey, it's okay Rub, everything will be fine, but right now I have to fight in the war. Whatever happens, never ever leave the castle.” 

“No, Skye!, I called as she ran out the gate swinging a sword furiously at pretty much anyone she could get to. I crumbled to the floor and burst into tears, holding my knees close to my head. A minute later I gathered my strength and told myself that if I could just reach the S.O.S. siren on the top of the Dragon School, I could help my family in the war. I opened the gate and ran for my life. Oh, how foolish I was to think I was going to make it to that school. Everything in my plan was correct but I didn't account for the fact that there are truly evil people in this world. I ran as fast as I could but I fell on something. I saw a well-dressed man with a sword rushing straight for me.” 

“Next thing I knew, I felt a gigantic pain in my wings. I looked back to see that my wings were broken and ripped. Tears poured out as I turned my head to see who had done it. It was that well-dressed man. He had a horrified expression on his face as he saw me, he dropped the sword and crumbled to his knees in horror. Someone who I assumed was his brother came flying in on a dragon and scooped him up to safety...” 

“Do you know who broke my wings and led the attack on my home?” she asked, no one answered. Opal wiped a tear from her eye and said strongly, “It was none other than Esben Wingfeather!”
