Chapter 20 My Proof
All the children gasped. “No, no.. you have no proof!” Janner yelled, tears trailing down his cheek.
“Oh, is it proof you want? Then proof you shall have! Ragana, Get me the box!” she said harshly as a servant girl who had dark Indigo hair that was cut jaggedly went into one of the rooms and came back with a little brown box with golden swirls carved into it. She handed over the box to Queen Opal.
Opal opened it and took what was inside and creased it in her palm. Obviously, the little trinket pained her to look at. After a moment she strongly said, "This is my proof!” And she held a golden medallion in her palm, it had the Annieran dragon seal on it.
“Is this not your father's King Seal?” she asked.
Janner looked in horror at the seal. It truly was Esben Wingfeather’s King Seal; he remembered it from Kal’s sketchbook. Everything he had thought about his father and everything he knew about his kingdom flipped upside down. It felt like the entire world was coming down, and it felt like he was floating off the ground.
“I….I…He….” Janner stuttered, tears filling his eyes.
Leeli clung to Kalmar, tears filled all the children’s eyes. For everything they thought they knew about High King Esben Wingfeather, was a lie.
“H-how….Did you get that?” Kalmar managed to squeak out.
“He dropped it when your Uncle Artham came in and scooped him up on that horrid dragon. Being a curious 10 year old girl, whose wings were just broken and ripped, I picked it up and cried for my parents.” Opal replied.
“Mama! Papa! Skye!” I cried, I heard my mother say over the cries of the battle, “Emerald save Ruby!”
A moment later my father came rushing towards me as my mother and sister were captured and put on the backs of dragons.
“Mama! Skye!” I cried but they were gone riding on the back of dragons into the sunset. My father looked at me, square in the face and carried me down, beneath our castle. There was a large tunnel system down there beneath the palace, where I was safe. He sat me down, took off his black velvet cape and put it around my shoulders.
“Will I ever fly again?” I asked even though I knew the answer.
He looked at me with sadness and said, “Oh, Ruby. I won't let anyone hurt you ever again! to keep you safe you will have to go by your middle name as Opal…” Queen Opal said, wiping a tear from her eye, when she stopped the children didn't look up but just kept staring at the shining purple marble floor, devastated with the story.
“So now, you know why I'm doing this!” Opal said strongly. “Guards! take these children including the Cobbler to the dungeon!” Then she quietly whispered to the chief guard standing next to her, “As far away from the King as possible.”
“Yes, your majesty.” said the guard as the other guards untied Sara, though she didn't try to get away or run to the others, she just let them take her. Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli were also like this, as the guards let them down seven flights of stairs to a deep dark cold, stone dungeon.
