Chapter 38 Sailing Home AgainâŠÂ
Queen Opal's ship was sailing on the Dark Sea of Darkness again but this time in the opposite direction. Although, the dungeon was made out of solid iron for this trip. Opal made each one of the Wingfeathers completely empty their pockets and she took Janner's sword. She locked them in the dungeon with a fingerprint recognition lock and slammed the door to the dungeon.
They all sat in silence, for now there is really no way to escape. Sara sat next to the window, Janner sat next to her, and then all the others sat on the edges of the cell.Â
âThere's got to be a way out.â Kalmar said, after a few minutes of silence.Â
âYeah, there's got to be a way out right, Sara?â Leeli asked, raising her head hopefully.Â
Sara lifted her head and said, âNo, there's no way out this time. She made us empty our pockets, the cell is made of solid iron, the red button on the wall has been covered and hidden, the lock is fingerprint recognition (which until today, I didn't even know what that was), there's no more lifeboats left, and the Dark Sea of Darkness is too deep here to even swim out.â She said, hopelessly.Â
âCome on, we can't just let her use us to attack our own kingdom! I'm the king, what does that say about me?â Kalmar said, thinking of what would happen if the Annierians actually believed Opal.Â
âI don't think she's going to attack them, she's just going to try to steal the crystal.â Janner said, hoping that this was what was actually going to happen.Â
âYou know this was supposed to be a surprise but since we're going there already I guess I can let you all know.â Nia said, as she looked up at the kids. They looked at her with excitement and confusion. âBefore we left for this crazy adventure, Papa, Oskar, Artham and I all asked Gammon and Maraly if they and the other Annierians could rebuild Castle Rysen to what it was when we first lived there. But I guess that's not really going to happen.â Nia explained, disappointed that the surprise couldn't be fulfilled.Â
âRebuild Castle Rysen!â Leeli said, as her eyes lit up thinking of what it might look like.Â
âYou mean you're going to rebuild it like how it looked when we first had to flee from there in the first place?â Janner asked.Â
âYes that was the idea anyway..â Nia responded.
âI haven't seen Castle Rysen since I was captured by Opal and dragged beneath her castle into the dark cold dungeonâŠâ Esben said mostly to himself as he shuddered at the thought of that cold, dark, wet, hard dungeon.Â
âWell, you're here now, we're all together and mostly safe.â Nia said and she scooched closer to Esben.Â
Leeli was staring at Sara's green dress, sticking out of her pocket was a little white and gold plush item.Â
âSara, what's that?â she asked, as she pointed to the little plush object. Sara looked down to see that the little object was in fact sticking out of her pocket. She gulped as she carefully took the little plush item out of her pocket. It was a little plush tricorn. She stared at it for a while, tears beginning to crawl into her eyes.Â
âHey, isn't that one of the plushies you can win at the Dragon Day festival?â Kalmar asked, not noticing the fact that Sara looked deeply sad as she looked at the plushie.Â
âYeah, it's actually the only piece of my parents I have leftâŠ.â she sniffled as her eyes began to fill with tears.Â
âThe Dragon Day, before last, I saw one of the game booths with these two silk tricorns. I wanted more than anything to get them. Because they were just like the ones in my favorite bedtime story that my parents would tell me about whenever I felt scared. I always love stories about The Shining Isle of Anniera or tricorns dancing in the moonlight as fairies flew through the night sky. I spent my entire Dragon Day allowance on that one rigged game. I tried so hard to get those two silk tricorns. My father saw how disappointed I was when I ran out of my allowance and wasn't able to get the tricorns. I was about ready to give up when he slapped a $5 bill on the countertop and smiled at me. I remember my mother laughing and sighing to herself as my father spent about maybe $50 on that one game. He wouldn't give up until he got the tricorns. On the last and final try, my father actually won the game. I remember the startled look on the booth owner's face as he saw that my father actually had won the rigged game. He gladly handed over the two silk tricorns to me, and looked puzzly at the game. I remember me, my mother, and my father walking away from that carnival game, laughing as I hugged my two silk tricorns close.Â
Every night that I felt scared or worried about the black carriage clumping down our street or the news that one of my friends or one of their family members had been taken by the black carriage, I would always snuggle close to my two silk tricorns as my parents kissed me good night.Â
The night that I was going to meet you Janner, for the Moon Bloom I had everything ready. I remember that night when my parents tucked me in, I requested them to tell me a story of the Lost Shining Aisle. They told me that when Gnag attacked the castle the royal family had to flee from the palace to a little small town. I was amazed at the fact that there was such a place in this crazy cruel world that was once so beautiful and kind.Â
Then my father turned the lights off and closed the door. The next thing I know I was being taken from my bed by three nasty fangs. As I cried for my parents, they ran for me. I remember being shoved in the black carriage but not before one of my two silk tricorns was lost. I still managed to keep one in my pocket.Â
I remember seeing my father running after the black carriage as I watched from the carriage window clutching my golden tricorn close. I've never been so scared in my life. This tricorn is the only thing I have left of them or my old home. When I went back to GIipwood I saw that the fangs had some fun with my home as well, for the door was knocked down and the whole building was just falling apart.Â
I have been across almost all of Aerwiar, and yet my parents have been nowhere to be found. When Queen Opal told us to empty our pockets, I still had to stuff the little tricorn messily into my hair praying that she wouldn't find it. She didn't, luckily, and I managed to sneak it back into my pocket.
But I still wonder what happened to that other tricorn, it was probably burned or lost or confiscated by the fangs. But if it's not, I hope someone who enjoys it as much as I do has it and keeps it safe.â Sara told as tears ran down her eyes.Â
âSara IâŠI⊠I'm so sorryâŠâ Janner said.Â
After this they all sat in silence, the only sound was the crash of the waves, as the dark purple boat sailed across The Dark Sea of Darkness.Â
This is so sad, I almost teared up!
