Chapter 41 The Final Crystal
“Are we there yet?” Kalmar whined. They had been walking for what seemed like days, but it really had only been a couple of hours.
“No we are not there yet and I'll tell you when we are there and please be quiet!” Opal said, shaking her head, having to constantly remind herself that she is doing this so that she can get revenge on the Wingfeathers.
The Golden Kingdom was truly just a wasteland. There was nothing on it except for sand and some trees but even the trees weren't green and had no leaves. It was truly a gloomy place to be. Leeli tried humming something that had been stuck in her mind ever since The Maker gave them their message at The First Well. But Opal grumbled at her when she did, and she immediately stopped and sort of whimpered quietly.
Janner had two different plans inside of his head for how they could try and steal the last crystal before Opal gets it. The other four were already in his pack which was literally on his back so they could at least steal those, but the fifth and final crystal shard, that one he wasn't so sure about. There were three problems: number one: he didn't exactly know where it was located, he only knew that it was behind the waterfall; number two: Queen Opal had been watching them like a hawk ever since they arrived at the Golden Kingdom, and number three: there was no time to escape. There was no dragon or friend next to them, just the island, the dark sea and Opal's boat. But he wouldn't give up. He tried to think of countless different outcomes and ways that they could take the last crystal so Opal couldn't get it. The outcomes weren't exactly the best of some of the plans.
He was thinking so hard about this that he nearly missed Opal calling out to them saying, “We're here!” He looked up to see that they were standing in the middle of nowhere. It was all sandy and didn't have much but a ginormous rock wall, it was gray and covered in a greenish teal moss. Rushing down from the wall was a bright blue foaming waterfall. There was sort of a rocky staircase showing behind the water, it shone like diamonds sparkling in the sunlight. He could hear the rush of the waves as they crashed down and foamed into white waves. It was the most beautiful waterfall he'd ever seen in his life.
“Is that the First Falls?” he asked.
“Yes, yes it is, this waterfall is the only thing left of the Golden Kingdom.” Opal explained, as she stepped closer to the waterfall.
Artham looked longingly at the water as they walked up the little rocky path that led to a secret path behind the waterfall. For he wondered if this was made by The Maker. Then could it have magical healing powers that might be able to fix his wings and claws?
The path was quite slippery because the water kept splashing over the path. Leeli allowed Janner to carry her on his back because she was having too much trouble with her leg and crutch walking up the slippery path. It was truly a beautiful sight, the path led behind the waterfall which was almost like being in a fairy tale.
Then as they turned the corner they saw it, suspended in air over a little stone pedestal was a little golden shiny crystal shard. This one was much smaller than the rest and it looked like it could fit right in the middle of the other four. Opal looked longingly at the crystal as she stepped to the side to allow Janner to reach for the crystal. He put Leeli down and stepped up to the pedestal. His hands were shaking as he stretched them out and touched the golden crystal. The second that he did, the force that was keeping the crystal suspended in air vanished as the crystal dropped carefully into his hands.
About a thousand plans and theories rushed through his mind for the thing that could decide the entire future of his kingdom and world was set carefully in the palms of his hands.
“Hand over the crystal.” Opal said, sternly. Her eyes were wide, a sense of crazy shown in them as she looked longingly at the crystal. He stole a glance at his family as his mind rushed for what to do next. Before he did anything he prayed to The Maker for Him to give him guidance to know what to do, and then reluctantly he handed the crystal over to Opal. She snatched the crystal out of his hands.
“At last! “she screeched as she held the crystal above her head admiring the beautiful goldness of it.
“Come on, Wingfeathers, time to visit another world!” she said and turned to the rocky wall. She flipped open Janner's pack and grabbed the other four crystals. Janner walked back next to Leeli, Sara, Kalmar, and his parents, as they watched what Opal was doing.
She thrust her hands out, and curled her fingertips, as magic came out of her hands in a big ball of bluish green flame. She moved them in a harsh way that made the crystals levitate in the air. She violently thrusted her hands towards each other which made each crystal lock together. Aerwiar’s crystal was on the top while Biolumia’s was directly on the bottom, Ember Island’s was to the right and the Emerald Kingdom’s was to the left.
“I will finally have my revenge!” she screamed, as she put the last crystal shard in its place. The Golden Kingdom’s crystal fit perfectly into the center of what was now the crystal star.
Suddenly the star glowed so bright everything was white. Opal turned her cape in front of her eyes to block the light and all the Wingfeathers closed their eyes as the light became too bright. As soon as it came, the light was gone. They were astonished to see what stood in front of them. On the rocky wall was a big swirling greenish blue portal!
“What have I done?” Janner thought, as he blamed himself for this whole thing.
Opal laughed an evil laugh, turned to the Wingfeathers and said, “Are you ready to see the world of Milky Way?” she said coldly
“You want us to go through first?” Janner asked, he thought this was a strange command, for whatever was on the other side of that portal, wouldn't they just be able to run away?
“Yes, you're going first as I need to make sure that you actually come with me, because if I leave you here then you are just going to come up with some elaborate plan to stop me. And let me just tell you that you will never be able to stop me!” she said as she narrowed her eyes at him. They all looked at each other nervously and locked arms with each other.
It was the strangest thing Janner had ever felt, as they walked through the portal. It was like walking through an open door. You don't really feel anything yet you're in a completely different room. But what was really strange about it was when they were walking through, he saw all around him planets and stars and comets, even asteroids. He had no idea why he was seeing outer space when just a few seconds ago he was standing in a mystical waterfall in a wasteland of what was before known as the Golden Kingdom. But just as quick as they had come, they had reached the other side.
Wait, I thought in the beginning when they were at the First Well Artham's claws and wings were healed...?
