Chapter 50 A Plan And A Memory
With the help of the Biolumines, the Ember Islanders, the Emerald Forest villagers, and the Aerwiarians, they were actually doing wonderful in the war. Yes, the Fangs still wouldn't 'go away' but they could tell that they were certainly wearing them out. But what they feared the most was Queen Opal. Since the war had started, she had not yet calmed down or stopped bursting power through her hands.
Janner noticed that she would stop shooting her power every 30 minutes or so. He wondered why she was doing this when a gigantic dragon walked up to him. It roared louder than anything he'd ever heard, a creature that was worse than Yurgen mashed with the Great Gnag the Nameless. When it came so close to him, he could see the poor dragon's eyes. He noticed that they were infested by that green swirling glowing magic. He banged his sword against his shield to try and distract the dragon which worked and then he ran to protect Kalmar from a Fang.
When he was running across the field he noticed something that would change the battle. He saw that Opal's amulet, the one that was lying on her bed when they had barged into a room by accident, was glowing the same green color that was surrounding the dragon's eyes. He watched as Opal touched the amulet and suddenly a surge of power blasted through her hands and she blasted another group of their army.
“It's the amulet!” Janner breathed as he sent another Fang soaring to the ground.
“Thanks!” Kalmar huffed thankfully for the Fang was about to crush him.
“No worries” Janner said, distracted, he didn't even look at Kalmar when he said that, he was just staring at Opal's amulet.
“What are you thinking?” Kalmar said slowly, knowing that same look on his brother's face that he'd seen time and time again throughout the past two years.
“Well it's just…”
“Watch out!” Marina called and she raced in front of them using her telekinesis which sent Fangs flying through the sky.
“Thanks Miss Marina” they both said.
“No worries,” she said. “I'm sorry about the palace. it just really hurt when you took my crystal, but that was a different day. Today is about fighting for your home and for all of our homes actually.” She said as she walked over to help some more people.
“So what were you saying with that face that I know cannot mean anything good?” Kalmar asked.
Janner was about to respond when a burst of Opal’s power combined with one of the dragons, catapulted across the field.
“Get down!” Janner yelled, as they ran to the rest of their family now hunching behind a bush. Until the power blast dispersed. They got up out of the bush and just started swinging their swords and shoving their shields against the Fangs and trolls.
“It's just, the amulet! Opal’s amulet, it’s what's controlling the dragons. If I can just destroy the amulet, the dragons will…” Janner said, as he was about to take off running towards Opal with a sword in the air, but Kalmar grabbed his arm just in time and said “No! Janner, I can't lose you again!” Kalmar was thinking about the last time this had happened.
Janner looked at him straight in the face, seeing the worry and sadness painted over his brother's face and said reassuringly, “You won't, I have a plan.” He wiggled out of Kalmar's grip and ran for his life towards Queen Opal with his sword in the air.
Kalmar watched him do this with great worry but not as much as Sara. When she saw what was going on she rushed over to Kalmar and asked “What in The Shining Isle is he doing?”
“He's going to destroy Opal's amulet. He thinks it'll release the power Opal has over the dragons and then the dragons will be gone and her power will be weakened even more. Then she won't be able to use her power because the dragon fire would be broken out of the amulet.” he explained, as he saw the rush of sheer panic come over Sara.
“You let him do that!?”, she said, exasperated.
“What?! I don't like it either. But he's the Throne Warden and my older brother.”
“Still you're the high king! Kalmar, you have control!” she said, shaking his shoulders.
“….Sorry it's just that…” she said, as her voice trailed with tears filling her eyes, as she thought of what she was going to say.
“I know, I was there when it happened the first time.", he said looking down at his feet and saw she was doing the same.
A rush of adrenaline rushed through Janner as he raced across the field with his sword in the air swinging at all the Fangs and trolls that came near him. He needed to get a clear shot at Queen Opal's amulet. His heart was beating out of his chest as he got rid of the last few Fangs and trolls. He couldn't believe that he, Janner, who is the more practical one out of the three of them, was doing something so crazy as going up against the biggest villain to destroy her power-infested amulet! But he didn't let this stop him. He rushed on and blocked out his thoughts, theories, plans and worries.
He was at the hill now where Opal stood. He could see the amulet glowing a dark green color around her neck. He was so close he could taste it. But then Opal turned around.
“Did you really think you could destroy this?” she asked, presenting her amulet.
“I hope you told your family you love them.”, she said as she thrust out her hands, touched her amulet, and spread her fingers apart. There was no time to run away. There was no time to swing his sword, there was no time to do anything. For the blast of power came as fast as light, and hit him directly in the face, knocking him to the ground unconscious. Opal wiped her hands together, laughed and said under her breath, “Fool!”
And went about causing havoc on the field.
Janner could barely see anything, everything was blurry, he could only hear a loud ringing sound. But he thought he heard the sound of voices calling his name in worry. He couldn't open his eyes for very long. He had to close them. When he did everything went black. The next thing he knew he saw an image in his mind. He couldn't quite place where it was.The memory was incredibly blurry like a picture that is out of focus.
He could make out a woman, she looked familiar. Her hair was dark and braided into a long messy braid. There was a man who also looked familiar who had blonde hair that was a little ragged but combed over and looked quite neat. They were smiling at him. He could make out that the woman had two baby girls in her arms. Then the woman talked, he couldn't quite make it all out but he understood this, “Janner, Kalmar, meet your new sisters: Leeli and Aliceinia.”
“Aliceinia?” he thought. He'd never heard a name like that before. But somehow he felt like it was familiar at some point in his life. Suddenly one of the babies started to cry, he could sort of make out the woman singing to her. But he couldn't make out the words.
The memory faded away after this, as the ringing in his ear became quieter and then he opened his eyes to see that Kalmar, Sara, Leeli, Podo, Artham, Nia, Esben, and Oskar were all staring at him with worry.
The second he opened his eyes he was greeted by a big hug from Sara.
“Are you okay?” Nia asked, Janner decided not to tell anyone about the memory and just said, “Yeah, yeah I'm fine. But we need to stop Queen Opal! If we don't, this war will go on forever.”
“The important thing is that you're safe”, she said, as she put her hand on his cheek. He missed these moments of feeling the sense of being safe even though the world around him wasn't safe. The sense of family, having everyone he loved and his family in one place together, all happy. But he couldn't focus on this now. For there was a bigger task at stake, one that could either save or destroy their entire world.
To be contiued......
