In the Green Hollows, if an outsider wants to marry a daughter of the Hollows, he must compete in the Banick Durga. Dougan dol Rona of Dorminey had to do this when he wanted to marry Meirabel Lannerty, and so did Podo when he wanted to marry Wendolyn. So do you think Esben had to compete in the Banick Durga to win Nia's hand, or did his being the crown prince (or king, since we don't really know when he took the throne) exempt him from this?

I always assumed that he did. When I made that connection, I was, like, "Oh, man. Poor Esben!"
And even if he was exempted from the Bannick Durga, I think he would just do it anyway.
Plus, I'll bet Podo would have liked to see how he'd cope.
Esben probably hired his brother to compete in his stead.
I wondered about that. Probably not, because he's royalty and the Hollows would respect him and his position.
That's a good question.
He might have not counted as an outsider, because of the relationship between Anniera and the Hollows. But it would be cool if he did participate.
Did you copy and paste dol Rona of Dorminey and Meirabel Lannerty?
While I think that he most probably didn't, as it seems like it was more something for outsiders, I really hope he DID. Because the thought of Esben competing in it is awesome, and like Throne Warden said, seeing Artham freaking out because he's unable to step in if he feels like he needs to would be very entertaining.
Esben, would of course love this, and play as dangerously as possible just to stress poor Artham out more.
Nia just laughs at it all, and shakes her head.
I think he probably did. He was a noble, honorable person and I think he wouldn't have let himself kingship be a way out. He probably did, and Artham probably was stressing the whole time.
I've been considering that for a fic I've been constructing and my guess is no....because I really just can't see him doing it and surviving, lol. I also think Nia wouldn't want him to do it.
Though it would be funny to see what Podo forced him to do as an alternative 😏
I think that he probably didn't have to compete due to the long lasting alliance between Anniera and the Green Hollows. I mean, it seems like the Annieran royalty had been marrying Hollowsfolk for a very long time.
I have no idea what the canonical answer would be, but I think it'd be pretty funny to imagine Esben trying to compete in it 🤣
