This is my first read through of The Wingfeather Saga. Right now, I've gotten to chapter 3. If you haven't gotten this far (which I doubt anyone is this far behind like me lol) look out for SPOILERS.
I got a good laugh with the introductions, I knew I would enjoy the humor as soon as I read those. Now, I saw the short movie from couple years back before reading the book and found lots of similarities (not surprising) from the book so I was familiar with some of what was in there. If I recall correctly, the thwaps in the short film made guinea pig noises when Podo brought them into the house... How do I know? I've had 12 guinea pigs from the time I was 6 lol. Anyway, that was funny to me. That's a rabbit trail (my brain works this way).
Anyway, I've gotten a feel for the characters so far. Janner is a solid daydreamer and finds his siblings (though he loves them dearly) to be burdens in a way. I stopped right after Janner had a baby fit. Oh Janner, we are too much alike. Anyway, it was lovely to see the interactions of each character. The siblings interactions remind me a lot of the ones in the book I'm writing, which was a nice surprise (I was hoping it would). The grandpa is hilarious. Mia is relatable to me lol. Leeli is an angel (not the ones covered in eyes) and Tink is... Tink! Charming so far.
You may be wondering, "why haven't you read ahead yet?" And I can answer that. I'm reading it with my best friend who lives in another state and I'm trying not to read furtherer than she is so we can experience the book together despite being apart. She is the Merry to my Pippin and the Samwise to my Frodo. Needless to say, she's a good friend. I miss her. When I said I never had a sister, I got to say she is the nonblood sister answer to my prayer. Sisters in Christ!
Another rabbit trail. My brain is full of rabbits, don't bother trying to catch any of them.
Anyways, Janner's struggle is already coming out in a form of selfishness and well, he said some really hurtful things. I relate highly to him at the moment (and that's not only just because our names are close... okay so it's half the reason.) You see, my family has had some troubles and long story short, I've been helping raise my nephew. Many times I've been selfish and groaned about not being able to do what I want to do. Still guilty of that sometimes now, hoping I can learn from Janner despite him being a fictional character. There has been a few times I've bottled and exploded, kind of what I see at the end of chapter 3. Needless to say, I really want to hear how Podo responds next (I don't think anyone would, but don't spoil it for me haha). On a happier note, poor Janner. He landed face first into horse "nuggets". It took me a moment reading that to understand "nuggets" meant poop. Ugh. I'm an adult, I should know what horse nuggets are! (Very quotable)
That has been my first take so far. I'm looking forward to reading more!
Wow! This is the oldest commentable post in the forum!
