Okay…so I thought this was happier when I wrote it….but I guess it’s not 😂
It’s not sad, but more productive! So…yay! Things happen! In relation to Janner! 😏
CHAPTER FOURTEEN: THE MAKER MOVES
Kalmar stared with hungry eyes at the Well. But the remembered something. The Maker had to be there, otherwise….well, Janner wouldn’t stand a chance.
He looked back at Arthra, who was looking at the ground, every noise making her twitch. Kalmar slowly walked towards the Well. His hand went out and touched the rim, the cold, smooth, beautiful stones.
He bowed his head and closed his eyes. “Oh Maker, be here please.”
He didn’t know that behind him, Arthra was silently praying, hoping.
Kalmar didn’t move…or think…or barely breathe. He sat there, terrified and wonder-filled. For ten minutes he sat there peacefully. Then another ten minutes. Then a half-hour passed by, and he began to get nervous. Another fifteen minutes, and he dared to open his eyes. Another fifteen minutes passed, and he stood up dejected, and tears filled his eyes.
He looked back at Arthra, but she couldn’t see him, couldn’t offer compassion. The emotions overwhelmed him, and he sank to the ground, hugged his knees to his chest, and sobbed.
Was this what it would end in? It would end in no chance for Janner? He was completely alone, save a cousin he wasn’t even sure he could trust. Who knew where the rest of his family was!?
He moaned, and then felt a hand on his shoulder. He opened his eyes and expected to see Arthra, but he didn’t. He saw a Man’s face, with deep brown eyes, dressed in a spotless white outfit, and he had the kindest face Kal had ever seen.
This was the Maker.
He took Kalmar’s hand in his and said, in a voice that was loud and soft, regal and friendly, familiar and shocking, all at the same time, “what are you doing by my Well, Kalmar?”
How Kal didn’t burst into tears that shocked him. “I…I need my brother,” he replied simply.
The Maker smiled. He looked up at Arthra, and she came forward, without even seeing Him, she came forward.
“And what are you doing here, my daughter?”
“I came to bring Kalmar,” she whispered.
“Do you have something for me to fix?”
Arthra looked up, and for the first time in years, she felt…loved. “Would you fix my..my home?”
The Maker smiled. “I already have. And as for Janner, it is time for action to take place. Listen to me, my children. Janner is alive, but barely. One of you must go and find him and give him the water, and another of you must go to Throg, because your family is in danger. Kal, you will decide who goes where, and Arthra, I will give you a special gift to fulfill whatever task you have.”
Arthra bowed her head, and she was fully prepared for Kal to send her to Throg, and he would go to his brother. You can imagine his shock when he said, “Arthra, you go to Janner. I will find my family. It’s my responsibility. Not yours. But, you care for Janner too, and I want you to…find him.”
Arthra’s jaw dropped. The Maker looked at them both. “I love you both, and I know you will do what is right.”
He took out a small blue canteen and handed it to Arthra, and she took it tremblingly. Then He stood, and walked toward the edge of the forest, and bought out a horse and led it towards Arthra.
“Trust me,” He whispered. She nodded slowly, a bit in awe, and then….He was gone.
She looked at Kal, who smiled at her. “This will all work out. Just make sure my brother is okay.”
Without saying another word, he hugged her, and she froze. But then she noticed something. She wasn’t…completely blind anymore. She could see shadows, and light, but not details.
She looked at the horse, swallowed hard, and garbed the reign of the horse.
“Be careful, Kal.” She got on her horse, and clicked softly, but thanked the Maker. She knew she had been rough and tough, so she paused and looked at Kalmar.
“I’m sorry, Kal. For everything. And I will bring Janner back.”
Without a response, she dug her heel into the side of her horse, and the beast went off at a fast canter. Kalmar smiled after her. He turned and faced the looming forest.
“Maker, guide me.”
He then began his long walk into the forest.
Hehehehehehe……😏
