Alright y'all. Let's talk ending. Thoughts? Feelings? Tears? No tears?
-should the ending be classified as sad or happy?
-is the ending satisfying?
-should Mr. Peterson have written more?
-do we want another sequel (even though we know we can't have one) or do we find it complete?
-above all... do we think the water from the well works?? and if so, how/why??
My opinion, as recently expressed on a Facebook post from the WFS addressing the same issue...
Janner lives, the epilogue hints too strongly for it to be otherwise. Andrew Peterson didn't want to make Janner a "Christ character" and hence his illusions to it, and not outright portrayal.
Plus, in Andrew Peterson's newest (released) book, he is quoted to have said,
*And I use my Oskar Reteep accent here😂*
"If you're asking whether I'll write about what happened AFTER the epilogue of The Warden and the Wolf King, the answer is a definite no. The canon is closed. I have my reasons, some of which are literary and some of which are theological, and they boil down to this: whatever hope or longing might have woken in you when you finished the book is far better than anything I might have written."
Andrew Peterson, Preface, Seven Thrilling Stories from the World of Aerwiar (2016)
So... that being said,
What do you think Janner wore at his wedding with Sara Cobbler? LOL
I know this is an old post, but I want to answer the questions now soooo...
I didn't cry, but I was really sad about Janner dying, although seeing Artham so happy at the end made me SUPER happy but at the same time I was still sad about Janner's death.
A hopeful sadness or a pained happy.
I think it honestly is very satisfying for me, knowing that there is hope for Janner's eventual revival and that they all lived happily in Anniera was really beautiful.
I feel like the story would lose it's charm as a hole if more were explained or written, it leaves you to think about it and come up with your own conclusion.
I think more books about other parts of the world and other's lives in Aerwier would be AMAZING! I would especially love a prequel about Anniera before the fall and Artham and Esben's lives.
I think it does work, but, only if the Maker bids it so. He is the one who does the healing when the water is used, it's not that the water is magic actually, it's that he heals through it.
I'm new!! And, you don't have to pay attention to me when I go on a BIG rant (which is what I do often) Okay, how do I start? It was the biggest cry of my ENTIRE LIFE!!!! Like, seriously, my sister was seriously alarmed. The ending should definitely be classified as SAD!!!! Duh! The ending was satisfying, but *sniffle* Mr. Peterson shouldn't have killed Janner!! YES!! Mr. Peterson DEFINITELY should've written more!! I personally think . . . we need another book. For sure. I'm not sure how to explain how I think the water from the well works.
Personally, I think that was the perfect ending. Janner has fulfilled his duty selflessly. Gnag is defeated, Anneira is restored, and her citizens have now lost their fangishness and their clovenishness. Janner dies in the process of fighting for something he loves. All is restored, but at a great price. Then, it ends with the possibility of Janner coming alive again? Andrew Peterson hit his goal. The story lives on in our hearts and our minds, and never ACTUALLY comes to a close. It allows for things and sites like this!!!
I made a proper ending on my fanfic page. Link is on my instagram page. Memes of the igibys. I know most of y’all felt the same way I did, and I talk regularly with a lot of fellow feather heads, Soo I wrote some stuff!
As sad as I was, when I think about it, I think it was a great ending in a way. It was Janner's duty as Throne Warden to protect his siblings, and he did so by sacraficing himself to take the stone. He saved all of the remaining Annerian people by doing so, un-fanging them all. I don't think we need another sequel, as much as I'd like that. It feels complete knowing there's a possibility of resurrection with the first well. It saved nugget, Podo, and possibly others, so there's a good chance it could save Janner, especially if the Maker's on their side. And hey, people like myself get to write fanfiction about it.
Me when I finished the series: The ending was a wonderful mix of happy and sad. Yes, there were tears, but what happened was RIGHT. A good story needs death of some kind, whether that be death to a dream, or actual physical death. The greatest story in the universe revolves around a beloved person's death! But in order for death in a story to be good, there also has to be life. The best stories are those of love and sacrifice. The Wingfeather Saga is FULL of these moments! And they are all SO beautiful!
I found the ending to be deeply satisfying! A perfect, lovely, aching end that needs no more told.
And the Epilogue? I love it. It's sort of a you-choose at that point. Does the Water work? Well, if you wanted to write a Sara x Janner fanfic, then yes, it worked. Lol. But for me? I think it could work, but Janner is with the Maker now. Why would he ever want to come back? :) He protected his family, and they are safe now. In my headcanon, the Water doesn't work because Janner is "already better" if that makes sense. XD Sad for us and his family, but wonderful for Janner!
However, I do believe the Water could make Leeli "better" and heal her leg. Heal her so that she can dance while she plays her music, and run through the shining fields of Anniera! :)
Those are my thoughts. I don't think Peterson needs to write anymore. I find the Wingfeathers' story complete. I'm content with fanfictions from here on out. :)
Me on Thanksgiving 2022: Wait, hol' up! They're making an animated series!!!!???? AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! YAS, GIVE ME MORE!!!!!
Lol.
No, the ending is NOT satisfying. #bringJannerback
THE ENDING IS SOOO SAD! POOR NIA! AND SARA! AND LEELI AND KAL!
YES HE SHOULDA WRITTEN MORE
Complete. Else I write a fanfic.
Yes, I think so. Don't ask me how...
obviously we believe it works! the question is did they find it...
Honestly I prefer how he ended it and think that if he had continued it it would take away from the ending. In this case it's up to reader discretion how it ends, which frustrated me the first time I read it but now is part of what makes it so well-crafted in my opinion. I feel like to have resolved it with a happily ever after would negate Janner's sacrifice, but it also doesn't completely destroy the idea of a happily ever after. It also means that it can end differently each time you read it. The second time I read it, the ending meant "Janner was saved, he and Sara got married, and everyone lived happily ever after". The most recent, it has meant "Janner was not revived, but he was honored in death and his legacy set an example for future throne wardens and, truly, for everyone". So yes, the ending may not have been satisfying, but it was perfect and should not be added on to.
I don't know if the water from the first well worked or not, but I do know that they all likely got really bad kidney stones afterwards.
Oh boy. 😂
I think we can safely conclude it works just because it doesn't make sense if it doesn't. Not as in doesn't make sense in the world, but doesn't make sense as in, too much emphasis was placed on certain things that it would be weird if Janner never came back.
So logically, the Well worked, but it's not a logical conclusion at all, it merely draws on expectations and conventions that I consider important.
Also, just a note, I think Janner should come back simply because it would be brutally unfair to Sara if he never did. Keep in mind that if he died then she NEVER WOULD HAVE SEEN HIM ALIVE after he escaped the Fork! Factory! and revitalized her hope even after it was long gone.
The ending was partially spoiled for me, but not the exact details so it was still a shock. I literally fell to my knees and almost dropped the book. I think the ending should be considered bittersweet. I don't think there needs to be a sequel, but if Andrew ever changes his mind and writes one I'll freak out and buy it immediately. I have to believe the Water from the First Well works. Why would Andrew give us hope and then it not work?
