Spoilers of the series below (duh)
A lot of things didn't line up with the book in this episode so at this point I'm considering it a separate work from the book. Too much has changed to have them be in the same world. It's a bit distracting how different they are from each other and it keeps me from fully being immersed in the world.
When the episode ended, I caught myself saying HOW DARE YOU END IT THERE with a wheezy breath.
Also I was MAD because Sara was taken. I almost teared up and I think they captured the gravity of the black carriage for everyone. I want to slap Mayor Blaggus for not doing anything but seeing as he has two kids of his own, he has a valid reason not to do anything, at least temporarily.
Also WHY IS LEELI AT THE CATACOMBS? I mean, I like how they're fleshing out hee character earlier on but these changes are getting more and more annoying to me as it goes along. Maybe it will balance out soon?
Noteworthy sword that belonged to Esben? How did Janner not recognize the name on the sword?
Peet! More Peet time! Yes! He argued with a lamppost and insulted its mother! Iconic. Best part HANDS DOWN.
As for the squeeblin, I have to say the animation for it was... really off. It stuck out too much, probably should of turned down the whiteness on the creature. I will say, however, when Leeli plays the song, it falling over like that is ME. I want a gif of it being dramatic. It's meme GOLD.
What were your thoughts? Let me know below!
hehehe... prepare for a rant...
1) I like how they are trying to let you have a more emotional connection with Sara but there are a few main problems.
a) WHY DOES SHE LIVE IN GLIPWOOD??? In "The places beyond the maps", it's clear she's from Torrborro. Now this makes the wonderful tale by Douglas McKelvey very inaccurate.
b) In the show, Slarb saw that Janner and Sara were friends and decided to take her to make Janner miserable. However, I never pictured Slarb sooo... Smart? Like he's very brutish and kind of an underdog among the fangs. I never pictured him as sly and cunning in getting revenge, just chaotic and rageful.
2. I kind of like how they are trying to include Leeli more, because Andrew said now that the whole series is finished he knows more about his characters and that's why they're trying to include Leeli.
3. You didn't mention this, but it made me kinda angry. WHY DO THEY KNOW ABOUT THE FLORID SWORD?
a) It takes away from just their boyish curiosity leading them to Anklejelly.
b) It paints Janner as far braver and responsible than in the first book. Obviously he does get braver and more protective as the series goes on, but the first book is where he leaves his childish desires (like the ones that led him to Anklejelly) once he (SPOILER WARNING) finds out he's a Throne Warden.
4. He didn't recognize the name Esben because he hasn't been introduced to his father's name yet.
Thanks for reading through my rant. 😁 Don't get me wrong I really do like the show, these things are just things that I noticed that I think make the books better. 😊
The main things everyone agrees on:
The squeeblins appearance
Peets argument with the post was iconic
(continuation of comment below, wouldn’t let me post the whole comment for some reason)
All in all, this is my favorite episode so far at least in the plot, story, and rewatchability, but it could definitely have been fine tuned more in its pacing. (And the squeablin. Please make the squeeblin brown and fuzzy angel studios!) I gotta say my fav part was Pete insulting the street sign’s mother.
I really loved this episode, probably more so than the previous ones, but that’s also because this episode really starts the actual story going. I was a little bothered by the changes from the book, but I think they did a great job making the storyline still interesting and engaging despite the changes. I enjoyed this episode immensely, however the main thing I was bothered by was that the pacing felt rather fast. Like it didn’t let your mind sit on the scenes for a bit before the next major thing happens. However I get that they’re trying to keep the episodes to 30 minutes, so I guess it’s not a big deal. Another thing was that I felt like they portrayed Janner for my taste just a little too head-over-heels for Sara than I imagined him. In the books it says he thinks her eyes are bright and beautiful, but he was never wanting to go on a legit date. He’s only 12, so I kind of cringed in his conversations with his parents, and Sara. Keep in mind that I am also not that into romance. Take me to the action scenes please! (I did like the part when he was talking out his game plan to give Sara the necklace and she was right behind him😂).
I completely forgot a detail I noticed that broke my heart 💔
When Nia and Podo are talking to Mayor Blaggus, he picks up a photo of his family and his hand rests near his daughter which is a footnote reference 😭😭
Yeah the squeeblin should have been brown in my opinion and the animation had a few places where it could be better but they said in the livestream that they knew there would be a few mistakes and that they would be fixed eventually! :)
I'm one who always likes movies to be as close to the books as possible. I was upset at the differences here at first (maybe especially since I'm an investor), but it's definitely growing on me. I absolutely LOVED this episode and even forgave them for bringing Leeli into the catacombs. I think for me its a bigger deal for the characters to remain the same. The thing that bothered me most about the Narnia movies was how the changed the character of the characters. They kind of changed Peter into a self-centered, argumentative jerk. With Wingfeather I feel like all the characters really are who they're supposed to be. But yeah, you do really have to consider it a separate work. Now that I can do that, I love it more! I still get upset at some of the changes, but I get over it faster.
And yes! PEET! And did you notice his accent??? It's Annieran!!!
My kids and I had the same response at that ending. My parents are visiting and watched it with us, and my dad couldn't understand why we reacted that way. He said, "But you've read the book. You already know what happens!" 😂
My thoughts:
Ok, where do I start...
First off, I was right about Janner meeting Sara and Sara not being there! 😁 I did cringe a little bit when they were having that awkward conversation.
I was sad when they took Sara. The look of complete sadness on Janner's face when Slarb told him they took Sara.... IT HURT TO SEE JANNER CRY 😢 I felt his pain
I was kinda disappointed on how far they drifted from the books. Bringing Leeli with them wasn't the best idea.
Peet insulting the lampposts mother was SO ICONIC! 🤣
I feel like the whole thing was REALLY fast paced, and would have liked for it to slow down a bit.
I still wanna punch Zouzab. And Mayor Blaggus.
When Janner saw the name on the sword and didn't even do anything I was like 🤨
The frame rate in this episode felt different, like it was rushed. And I didn't like how the squeeblin looked. At all. It didn't match the rest of the animation.
When it ended I was like, wait what? THATS THE END?! The ending was way to abrupt.
But overall, it was a great episode! I loved it! I just love how the characters interact with each other in a way that feels so real and not acted out. The animation and music was absolutely beautiful! I can't wait for part 2!
In an older livestream they did say that it would be a separate thing from the books. Sorta like the show and the books both revolve around the center which is the true heart of the story or something.
Not to sound mean or rude, but it is a separate work. Every adaptation is
It is a separate series. I can't justify how much they clipped.
The squeeblin was rather distinct looking. It looked too different from the rest of the animation.
