- Spoiler FanfictionThis one is pretty fun! I liked doing my own spin on the Ice Prairies, and I was happy I was able to write about the time Peet was there. Also, the chapter title came from Peet, because he calls it the Icy Prairies CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX: THE ICY PRAIRIES Artham could feel his teeth chatter. “I sure am glad your father brought these coats, otherwise I would really be cold here.” Donovan laughed. “So would I. But my father always thinks ahead. Thats why he is in charge of running these quests and not me. I am just training to do it.” “I’m sure when the time comes you will do just as good as your father.” “Thanks Artham.” There were many long, cold days of travel in this part of the world for our trio. Many nights they were exhausted, but they were strong, and they persevered. All of them had goals. Darian wanted to get these two young men safe and sound out of this quest. He had lost people on these quests before, and he did not want to lose his son or his new friend. Donovan wanted to become a strong guide like his father, even though that seemed an unattainable task for him. Artham wanted to get back in time for the birth of his child. That night, Darian brought pleasant news. “One more day of walking, my lads, and we will be in Kimera.” What a relief it was to those two. Soon, all of this cold would go away, and they could warm themselves by a real fire, not the little, pathetic ones they had been having. After a cold, hard sleep, they were awoke abruptly by Darian the following morning. He had a troubled look on his face, which made both of the men get up quickly. “What is the matter, father?” Donovan asked, concern flooding his face. “We need to keep moving, and tonight we should sleep in a cave, lest those blasted birds try to kill us.” “What birds?” Artham asked, buttoning his coat and looking all around. “Snickbuzzards,” Darian said, disgust filling his tone. “You want to see a vile creature, you should look at those monsters. They’ll swoop down and injure us before we would even know they were coming.” Artham and Donovan looked at each other. “We best be off before they return,” Darian said, grabbing his pack, and advising the boys to do the same. They walked in silence for a while, all of them keeping a wary eye on the sky. Once or twice they heard a bird squawk, just to see it was not a snickbuzzard, though when it was a snickbuzzard, Darian was ready. He had his bow strung and knocked down the beast before it could swoop. “Looks like we have dinner,” Darian said, smiling. “You boys ever had the pleasant taste of snickbuzzard?” It tasted better than either of them thought, but maybe that was because they were especially hungry. “This cave should do good,” Donovan said, admiring the one his father had found. “Thank you, son,” Darian replied, with a grin. “Let’s all get some much needed rest.” Blankets were laid out, good nights were said, and Artham shut his eyes, giving a silent prayer to the Maker for his protection. An hour later, Artham woke up from a nightmare. His hands trembled as he woke, but then he calmed himself and looked around. All was peaceful. Arundelle was fine. His baby was fine. Esben was fine. It was all okay. Except for that stench. His nose curled at the scent. He sat up, looking around with a yawn. Something was not right. He could tell by the way the hairs on the back of his neck stood up straight. He slowly stood, quietly, not wanting to wake his friends, and he walked towards the back of the cave in darkness. After a few moments, he decided to light a torch, and he continued down the dark corridor. His breath departed him when he saw what it was. A bomnubble. His heart pounded, fear gripped him, and he fell back into the shadows. The creature was half-awake, and Artham knew he was already half-dead. He half-walked half-ran back to the camp, and upon arrival, he shook Donovan awake. “Don, Don!” “What, what?” “There is a bomnubble at the back of the cave.” Donovan sat straight up. “You can’t be serious.” “I am. We need to get out of here before it wakes up.” Donovan nodded, and he reached out and shook his father awake. Artham drew his sword and looked around him cautiously. Darian slowly began to wake up. “Alright, let’s get out of here.” “Wait!” Artham hissed. He turned his head slightly, and everyone froze as they heard a stomping footstep. “Hide, now!” Artham ordered, replacing his sword to its sheath and yanking out his bow. Everyone ducked behind a rock, a huge rock, and then the putrid stench of the bomnubble quickly followed. Everyone tensed. There were not many who could survive a bomnubble attack. There was a tense silence. The bomnubble seemed to sniff the air, and then a low growl escaped the creatures mouth. It stomped towards the rock, and Artham’s finger tightened on the bow string. It’s ugly face was seen, it roared, and the arrow flew. “RUN!” Artham shouted, turning as he did, so he did not see the arrow hit its mark, but he knew from the cry of pain it most certainly did. All three of them rushed anyway they could, which was deeper into the cave since the Bomnubble had the entrance blocked. “Arm yourselves!” Darian shouted, drawing his sword as he ran, looking all around him in terror. As they ran through the cave, hearing the bomnubble roar behind, they saw with dread that it split, and they felt even more dread when they found themselves separated. Artham was in the tunnel on one side, all by himself, and Darian and Donovan were in the other. The bomnubble followed Artham. Artham ran as fast as he could, even though his legs ached terribly. He saw a light up ahead, and knew the exit was near. That gave him hope. The bomnubble roared behind him as Artham was almost to the exit. He was out! Now to outrun this terrible beats. But alas! Artham’s foot found a rock and tripped, hurtling himself to the ground. He turned on his back, drew his sword quickly, as the bomnubble attacked him. “Father! We have to find Artham!” Donovan shouted. Their path had also let them out, and now they were worried about their friend’s safety. “We will, son.” “Father!” Donovan pointed wildly ahead, and Darian’s face paled. There was the bomnubble, lying flat, but there was no Artham in sight. Could the creature have gobbled Artham up and fallen asleep afterwards? Both men cautiously drew their swords as they came nearer, half tip-toeing. As they got closer, however, they could clearly see the creature was dead. And then, oh relief! They heard a slight groan come from under the creature. They both, with much struggle, pushed the beast off of…Artham! Artham sat up, half-stretching, looking exhausted, and with a gash on the side of his face. But he was alive! Immediately, they helped him to his feet. “Artham! Thank the Maker, we thought you were dead!” Donovan shouted. “Let’s get that wound cleaned up,” Darian said. Artham nodded. “Please do.” “Perhaps that can be better accomplished inside, my friends,” came a voice. All three of them looked up, startled, and beheld before them a woman, a kind looking woman, holding a staff, with two big soldiers behind her. One of them walked forward and linked his arm in hers. “Welcome, friends!” the man said. It was the woman who spoke before. “I am Orion, and this is my wife, Onwaa. What is your business here?” “I am a guide, getting this young man, who just killed a bomnubble, back to his family. But we need rest and food.” Orion smiled. “I can help with that.” He banged his staff down twice, then stroked the ground with the tip of his staff. Behind him, a door opened out of the ground, and a warm light came through. “Welcome to Kimera.” I had to have Artham kill a Bomnubble, he's Artham 😊 And Onwaa!!!!Like
