Holidays and Hot Breakfast
The abundance of miracles finally proved to be too much for Oskar, and he promptly fainted, falling to the soft ground with a thump.
“Mr. Reteep!” cried the jewels in unison,
“He's all right. He's just overwhelmed by all the Maker has done for us today,” Nia assured them. “And I'm just about to that point myself!”
Janner hurried over to his mother's side, concerned that she might collapse at any moment as well and urged her to sit down.
She complied, assuring her son that she'd be fine, but appreciated his concern.
Leeli ran over to Artham and wrapped her arms around his middle. “Uncle Artham, I like your smile.”
“As do I,” agreed Nia, smiling herself, “I had forgotten how your face could light up like that. It's been a long time since I've seen it.”
“It's been a long time since this family has seen -since I've seen- a bright day,” explained Artham, looking down at his niece and stroking her hair with his human hands that would never hurt her. Then he looked up with a mischievous glint in his eye. “It's also been a long time since I've tasted bean and batter stew.”
“Well. Sounds like I'll have to try my hand at making some again when we return to Anniera.”
Janner was surprised that Kalmar didn't immediately perk up at the mention of their mother's legendary recipe, and noticed that he was staring off into space, seemingly deep in thought.
Kalmar rubbed his chin. After a moment, he spoke up.
“Can I make new holidays as king?” he asked.
“I don't see why not,” Nia replied, “what do you have in mind?”
“I think that today, every year, should be known as Maker's day. Everyone should rest from their everyday work and take the time to remember and celebrate what the Maker has done for them. There could be songs, and games, and….” Kalmar's own stomach suddenly interrupted his words with a rumbling roar. “...and there could be a huge feast?”
“I think that's a wonderful idea,” said Nia.
“Great! But I'm hungry now too.. Can we eat breakfast?”
“It's more like lunch now,” chuckled Artham, looking up at the sun's position in the midday sky, “but it would be a shame to let the applesauce I made go to waste!”
Kalmar didn't need any further encouragement. He bolted over to the campfire and snatched up the bubbling pot. Now, that was the Kalmar Janner was used to.
“Don't burn yourself!” called Janner, who was trying to find enough spoons.
“I won't!”
“Save some for the rest of us!” Leeli exclaimed as Kalmar wolfed it down, straight out of the pot.
“‘Oo ‘ate… 'orry…”
Janner, who had just finished preparing the bowls and spoons, sighed.
