So l got the Wingfeather tales for my birthday, and l started reading it at camp. And l’ve got to say, “Shadowblade and Florid Sword” is by FAR my favorite story. The plot is solid; it definitely reflects the feel that a good short story should have, and l love the cliffhanger.
The characters are there in their full, goofy Wingfeather glory, and the story is a good mix of serious and wacky. Maraly is amazing; it’s cool to see how she grows as a character, and we get to see the guilt from when she was a Strander. Gammon is well done, as always, and the dialogue between the two seems natural.
Characters and plot aside, the best part of this is definitely the art style. OH. MY. GOSH. The detail in the backgrounds is incredible, and the characters flow with the world around them.
I can’t tell you how many times l’ve read a really good graphic novel, with a great plot and characters, that is ruined by the fact that the characters don’t fit with the world around them. I don’t mean that the characters purposefully don’t fit in, but that it’s like the author drew in the characters, and then just slapped on a generic, random background that doesn’t fit the scene at all.
This isn’t the case here. The characters fit in with the city, and you can really see Andrew Peterson’s world building come to life. The characters seem real.
I love the way the characters are portrayed, and how the art style changes, depending on the mood of the panel, silly or serious. The expressions are hilarious, especially Maraly’s. And of course, all the Easter eggs are AWESOME as well.
Btw, this is just my opinion; you can like whatever you want 😊
